African
Princess
A
little girl caught my eye as she leaned out the window of her tiny
dwelling. Like her older sisters and aunties, she was elegantly dressed
- dressed to kill, in fact. A string of plastic pearls adorned her
delicate neck, a fitting accessory to her favorite green dress. She
looked at me with dancing eyes, encouraging a picture. I walked toward
the house and positioned her on the window ledge. She seemed remarkably
poised. As I readied myself to make a picture, she crossed her legs,
laid her hands gently on her neck, and looked toward the sky. A
natural‑born African princess.
